The 10th day of Muharram holds significant historical importance in Islamic history and is known as the Day of Ashura. It is a day that is observed by both Sunni and Shia Muslims but with different perspectives and practices.
1. Musa (A) and the Israelites: According to Islamic tradition, the Day of Ashura is associated with several important events. One of the most prominent events is the story of Prophet Musa and the Israelites. It is believed that on this day, Allah saved Prophet Musa and his followers from the tyranny of Pharaoh by parting the Red Sea, allowing them to escape safely while drowning Pharaoh and his army.
2. Significance for Sunni Muslims: For Sunni Muslims, Ashura is a day of fasting and celebration. It is recommended to fast on the 9th and 10th days of Muharram as a way to commemorate the liberation of Prophet Musa (A) and the Israelites.
3. Significance for Shia Muslims: For Shia Muslims, Ashura holds profound mourning and grief. It marks the martyrdom of Imam Hussain ibn Ali, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). On the 10th of Muharram in the year 680 CE, Imam Hussain and his followers faced a tragic battle known as the Battle of Karbala. They stood against the oppressive Umayyad caliphate but were outnumbered and ultimately martyred. This event is considered a symbol of resistance against injustice and tyranny for Shia Muslims. On Ashura, Shia Muslims hold processions, recite elegies, and participate in various rituals to remember the sacrifice of Imam Hussain.
4. Reflection and Repentance: Regardless of the sect, Ashura is seen as a day of reflection, repentance, and seeking forgiveness from Allah. Muslims may engage in acts of charity, prayer, and self-discipline as a way of drawing closer to God.
It's important to note that the way Ashura is observed can vary based on cultural and regional practices. While Sunni Muslims primarily focus on fasting and celebrating, Shia Muslims observe it as a day of mourning and remembrance of the tragedy of Karbala. Nonetheless, both sects recognize the historical significance of the day and observe it with deep reverence.
